When it comes installing your synthetic lawn, it is always best to utilize a professional or an organisation that specializes in applying synthetic turf that will satisfy your needs supply the highest quality finished product. The installation information supplied below is for those individuals with construction experiences who wish to undertake this kind of project on their own and has been supplied for reference only. No representations or warranties are made regarding the installation information nor are any results guaranteed by utilizing the installation information. This information is not intended to include all information that may be needed to install synthetic lawn.

Step 1 Layout the area and strip the existing material

Using a rope or spray paint to outline your proposed border, layout the area in which you want to install your synthetic lawn. Remove all vegetation and other debris down to the bare earth. Rotting grass today may cause unwanted dips tomorrow. Sprinkler may be capped or removed at this time.

Step 2 Sub Ground Preparation

It is recommended to excavate existing lawn to the depth of 75mm-100mm. It is most important not to lay turf in extreme wet conditions as it muddy and difficult to lay materials to make it flat and compacted. It is highly recommended that you install a synthetic turf on a compacted crushered rock and finish with crushers dust base. A sub base with a minimum of 30mm-50mm of crushers dust after a compacting of crushed rocks is laid. In sandy or clay conditions you may wish to use a thicker base.

Remember this is only a guide, if you are in doubt; please consult your local landscaper or landscape architect for base materials recommended for your area.

Care should be taken to choose a material that is free of large stones and should be graded and compacted to as smooth a finish as possible. The product should be composed primarily of crushed stone, with enough fine sand to assure compaction and stability. Be sure to compact the base several times and dampen the crusher’s dirt prior to packing.

Plate compactors and additional tools may be hired by the day and are usually inexpensive. Otherwise water filled roller will also do the job. Remember – your goal is to make the base as hard as possible. You should compact the base at least twice and don’t forget to make sure you have enough falls on the base to allow water to drain.
You may wish to install optional edging, Brick decorative or natural stones, timber are and other metal edging will compliment your showcase. These materials can be obtained from your local hardware store.

Step 3 Roll out the synthetic turf

Once the base work is completed, roll out the turf and allow it to relax for several hours. This should cause any wrinkles to settle. During this time, the sunlight will warm up the fiber and allow you easily to brush sand down to the bottom surface of the pile height. In cooler areas, it maybe a challenge to get the sand from the surface to the bottom, however it may result in extra attention in brushing back and forth to allow it to settle.

Cut turf to fit where necessary. This can be done with a sharp utility knife and new blade. Cut the turf to fit around trees, flowerbeds and landscape islands etc. If you have made a mistake and cut too less or too short at edges, don’t worry. Simply use the seaming method describes below to put turf together where you want it. In areas larger then 2.0 meter in width, where two pieces of turf must be seamed together, seaming tape and outdoor carpet glue can be purchased at Magic Turf or from your local hardware or carpet supply store. It is important to use a high quality, outdoor adhesive to prevent delaminating later. It should be noted that although the turf can be joined together, these seams are sometimes noticeable if not done correctly. It is always advised to joining the turf at the same directional to avoid bidirectional lines.

Once you have finished installing the turf, step back and assess the landscape. Be sure your turf is in the right placement, if you find that your layout isn’t just right, change it now with the joining method described above.

Step 4 Securing the turf

Once turf has cut to size and properly lay and joints are in tacked. It is now to secure the edges. There are few optional to secure the turf.

Option 1

Most commonly, a 100mm flat head nail will do the job by nailing the edges in 200mm intervals.

Option 2

Using planks of timber or any sort timber to place under the turf is also commonly used. This is done prior the crush rocks and crushers dust installation. This plank of timber is used to nail the turf onto. Remember the level of the timber be at same level as the height of the sub-ground.

Option 3

In more stabilized areas such as on concrete or pavements, adhesive glue can be used to hold the turf down to secure it lifting on edges.

Step 5 Install the infill material - Sand

Now its is time to install the infill material.

Your first task is to gently spread sand across the entire area. Typically this sand is sprinkled across the area as evenly as possible. The aim is filling 1/3 of the pile height with sand. Most commonly, you may use or hire a sand spreader tool for larger areas but not necessary. Once all the area is covered with white
dry sand or washed sand, using a broom to brush the grain to allow sand to fall between blades of grass. Make sure you keep the grass fibers upright during this process. Your aim is to get the sand to fall in-between the blades of grass.

Ensure you don’t dump large volume of sand in one area of turf as this will make your installation day a longer process. It will not damage the fiber of the grass; however the process of brushing the sand evening across the area may be time consuming.

Step 6 Install the infill material - Granules

Once the sand is evenly spread across the area and brushed to bottom of the pile, next step is to distribute Magic Turf rubber granules over turf – same process as step 5 Sand.

Evenly spread is advised and using broom to brush down to the bottom of the turf fiber. Once again, do not tip or pour the bag of rubber granule in one area, sprinkle little at a time. Large volume of rubber granule will flatten the turf and result in flat lawn. Ensure you infill 1/3 of rubber granules.

It is advised to purchase 1 bag of rubber granule to keep in the shed for additional top dressing up at large foot traffic areas, especially where pets or play areas.
